Senate
bill 484
Senate bill 484 concerns public records
in the custody of County Clerks,
Assessors, and Treasurers. This bill would
authorize the New Mexico
Secretary of State to convene a panel including the
public to establish
uniformity regarding public records for internet purposes.
This would
assure easy access by the public as those records go on-line.
This bill
has already passed
the Senate Judiciary Committee and is scheduled for
hearing in the Senate
Finance Committee.
Some title companies have opposed the legislation
because they feel that
the public should not have easy or inexpensive
access to public records.
A few County Clerks, Treasurers, and Assessors (mostly
from Curry, Lea,
Sierra, and Harding Counties) oppose the bill because
they either lack
computerization or because they, as elected officials, somehow
feel that
they own the
public information.
It is imperative that Senate Bill 484 pass before individual
Clerks,
Treasurers, and Assessors create individual incompatible systems
of
access and retrieval.
