Acacia Community School
is a new option for quality education in Taos. It is a progressive, learner-centered program for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. The curriculum is built around the variety of ways people learn, and the learning process exten ds into the community beyond the classroom. Most importantly, the school creates a nurturing environment that respects and encourages each student's particular interests and talents.

Acacia will collaboratively work with parents to ensure open communication, on-going
opportunities for parent involvement, a monthly newsletter for parents and students and the
development of a parental advisory board.

*Service-learning, an important part of the Acacia curriculum, is a method by which
people learn and grow through thoughtfully-organized service projects. These projects
provide opportunities for real-life application of academic skills and knowledge while
fostering a sense of caring for others and respect for the environment. Examples of
successful service-learning projects include voter registration drives, łgrowing classroom˛
gardens and tutoring younger students.

The Acacia Community School staff is experienced and caring staff and includes:

Eileen Pedersen holds her teaching certification from CU Boulder and has taught in
classrooms from 6th to 12th grade. She is a bilingual former Peace Corps volunteer
(Honduras) who is trained as an Emergency Medical Technician.

Angelia Roach a graduate of UNC, Wilmington, has worked as a teacher, educational
consultant and leader of wilderness and experiential education programs. Most recently, she
helped assess curriculum and design the scholarship program at San Juan Pueblo.

Thos Myers, a graduate of Eckerd College in religion and philosophy, joins Acacia as
it's new math and computer teacher. Thos is also in charge of Independent Studies at
Chamisa Mesa High School.
