Day School wins Eight Northern

The Taos Day School Eagles won the championship of the Eight Northern Pueblos Co-ed Elementary Basketball League tourney, defeating the San Juan Warriors in the tourney final March 4, 59-58.

San Juan jumped to a 25-8 first-quarter lead, but the Eagles, sparked by the standing-room-only crowd at the Taos Pueblo Community Center, pasted San Juan in the third quarter, 20-9.

Sixth-grader Dwayne paced the Eagles with 24 points and was named to the all-tourney team.

Adding to the point total were Mike with 13, Vernon with nine, John eight, Peter three and Leslie two.

In the opening round March 1, Taos bombed Tesuque 54-13.

Taos then pulled off the upset of the year, defeating powerful Santa Clara A in the semi-finals March 2, 54-52, in overtime.

Joining Dwayne on the all-tourney team was sixth-grader Leslie.

Other players on the Taos squad included Antonio, Kyle, Jared, EL and Michelle.
