Food & Fitness: Build a Healthy Lifestyle

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Physical inactivity and unhealthy eating are risk behaviors that have a critical impact on health. Together, they are responsible for at least 300,000 preventable deaths each year. Only tobacco use causes more preventable deaths in the United States. Read more at the Centers for Disease web site.

Take the Interactive Healthy Eating Index Dietary Assessment
After providing a day's worth of dietary information, you will receive a "score" on the overall quality of your diet for that day. This "score" looks at the types and amounts of food you ate as compared to those recommended by the Food Guide Pyramid. It also tells you how much total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium you have in your diet.

“Words of Encouragement from Armando Jaramillo
“I was diagnosed with diabetes a few years ago. My doctor put me on medication and referred me to Holy Cross Hospital Diabetes Self Management Program. I have been working with Susan Kargula R.N. and Molly Bearden, dietitian  to learn about changes I can make in my eating habits that will help me with my diabetes. I have been exercising by doing water aerobics at the Northside Fitness Center every weekday – faithfully!  I also include lots of fresh vegetables, salads and fruit in my diet. In fact, I'm having a salad for lunch today. I no longer need a medication to control my diabetes because of the healthy changes I have made in my life.”
