Fang did not always stay in the village. He loved walking into the mountains and camping for several days in the clear cool streams. It was during this time that he found some very distant-and very strange looking-cousins, which he named the "Kokanee-salmon" that lived in the mountain streams of Findian country.
The Kokanee knew the mountains and the streams, even better than the Fish Findians, and they would take Fang for long swims up the streams through the winding canyons. It was during one of these excursions that Fang saw a spot of yellow glitter coming from a rock in the water.
The place where Fang saw this yellow rock is called, Midnight, located at the top of Cabresto Canyon in heart of Findian country.
The name "Midnight" was given to this place by cowfish who traveled through these mountains, on horseback. The cowfish knew that if they reached the foot of Cabresto Canyon by sunset they had to either stopped there and make camp-for the night-or continued to the top of the pass. If you decided to go on, it would take you until midnight, before you could reach the top.
Each Cowfish took a risk if his decision was to continue up the canyon. If he was wrong, and was caught in the middle of this Canyon when a winter storm or summer flash flood hit, he would surly die. However, if he made it to the top of the pass, he would find a small community with shelter, provisions, a warm fire, whiskey and companionship. Most Cowfish took this risk and Midnight became a small but prosperous community with only four buildings-a store, barn and two saloons.
Fang loved Midnight. The water was crystal clear, the stars shown like bright diamonds against the coal-black, night sky.
... and he also loved the free Kokanee who acted not unlike Keltic "little people" as they were fond of darting up this stream or that one ... or hiding to surprising you by popping out from a hidden bolder as you swam by.
Fang knew he would return to this spot one day.
