Objective

Students will make a paper mache model of a balloon.

Class Arrangement

Arrange the class into small cooperative group.  A good size is four.

Materials

Per group of three or four students:
Four balloons, four pages of newspaper, four recycled newspapers cut in one inch strips, a bucket, one – two bottles of liquid starch and 2 feet of blank newsprint or white butcher paper cut in one inch strips

Procedure
 

  1. Gather equipment.
  2. Blow up balloon and tie the end of it.
  3. Cover your desk with a sheet of newspaper.
  4. Pour liquid starch in bucket.
  5. Cover balloon with liquid starch.
  6. Place first layer of newspaper on the starch.
  7. Cover newspaper on balloon with liquid starch.
  8. Place second layer of newspaper on the starch.
  9. Cover newspaper on balloon with liquid starch.
  10. Place layer of blank news print or white butcher paper on the starch.
  11. Place balloon on table to dry for at least 24 hours.
