Judith Pepper, La Plaza Executive Director congratulated the winners and introduced Pete Warner, La Plaza Board of Directors President and Nancy Montano, Essay Contest Coordinator. Pete and Nancy presented the winners and their parents to the standing room only crowd. Each winner was presented with a certificate and received a computer, assorted software and printer for writing the winning essays. La Plaza also is providing each of them with an Internet access and email account for one year.

This year's essay theme was "Think Globally, Act Locally to Promote Tolerance." Essays submitted were read and scored by a panel of judges made up of community members from Taos County. The panel included Joleen Montoya, Sharon Tavanier, Helen Lopez, Pam Romero, Gary Maitland and Tetsuro Namba. Each essay was judged on the following: Content, Clarity and Creativity. The scores were totaled and the six students with the highest total points was declared the winners. The contest was open to all Taos County students including those in private schools and children who are home schooled.

La Plaza would like to thank all Taos County students that submitted an essay. We only wish we had more computers to give away.
