Keyboard
and Mouse Tutorial
A self-paced tutorial on
using the keyboard and a mouse for the PC can be taken at any time during
public access hours at the La Plaza Public Access at the Youth and Family
Center. One-on-one assistance will be available during the tutorial.
Getting
Started Using Your Computer
This is a 2-hour class for
those who have not used a computer before or are just getting started using
a Windows computer. It will cover starting and shutting down the computer
properly; the use of the mouse, left and right sides; how to open programs
from icons; find programs in the Start Menu; how to create and save a file;
using the recycle bin, taskbar.
Prerequisites: None, the Keyboard & Mouse Tutorial would be helpful |
Computer
Tune-Ups: Basic Maintenance
A 2-hour class on maintaining
the PC computer using Windows 98. It will cover using system tools such
as defragmenting the hard drive; running scan disk; deleting temporary
Internet files; running Windows updates and ant-virus updates. It will
also cover basic trouble shooting for program or operating system freezes;
backing up files.
Prerequisites: 6 months Windows experience, Knowledge of Start Menu and Control Panel |
Virus
Protection
This is a 2-hour class on
how to protect your PC computer from viruses. It will cover what are viruses
and how do they work; anti-virus software; how to run a virus scan; doing
Windows and Anti-virus updates; how to find information about specific
viruses.
Prerequisites: 6 months Windows experience, Knowledge of Start Menu and Control Panel |
Using
Windows 98: Beginning
This 4-hour hands-on course
will teach participants how to start and shut down a computer properly;
how to use icons (moving, opening, and creating shortcuts); how to use
windows (resizing, the menu bar, title bar, tool bar, scroll bar and status
bar); how to use a diskette; create new files and save; customize the desktop;
create new folders; and check properties of files and folders.
Prerequisites: Keyboard and Mouse |
Using
Windows 98: Intermediate
This 4-hour class will teach
participants how to use Windows Explorer; work with files and folders (copy,
move, delete, and rename); create their own directories; understand directory
pathways; find files; use Run; customize the Start Menu; customize the
task bar; backing up files; check system properties.
Prerequisites: Keyboard and Mouse, attended Using Windows 98 Beginning or some Windows experience. |
Optimizing Images for the Internet
A 4-hour class where participants will learn about computer images, image file types and tips and tricks when using scanners and digital cameras. Participants will learn how to optimize images to minimize download time for web pages or sending images via email.
Prerequisites: Experience with Windows; Word processing experience |
Downloading and Installing Software
In this hands-on two hour class participants will go through the step-by-step process of downloading files or programs from the Web and from CD's and installating them in their computer. Tips and tricks of the process will
be identified and explained. It will also cover uninstalling programs.
Prerequisites: 6 months Windows experience, Knowledge of Start Menu and Control Panel |
Creating CD's and Backing Up Files
This is a two hour class where participants will learn to burn CD's by doing it in class. They will transfer a program to a CD, and back up files on a CD. It will also cover why back ups are important, other choices for backin up files, and
organizing files on a CD.
Prerequisites: 6 months Windows experience, Knowledge of Start Menu and Control Panel |
Using Your Windows XP Computer

Word
2000: Basics
This 4-hour hands-on course
will teach participants to use a word processing application on a personal
computer. They will learn to create, format, finish and save a word document.
The class will cover selecting data (inserting, copying, moving, and deleting);
text formatting (fonts, alignment, line spacing, underline, italics, headers,
footers, styles and pagination, page margins); how to use spell check;
cut, copy, paste; use the office assistant; keyboard shortcuts; using toolbars.
Prerequisites: Keyboard and Mouse, attended Using Windows 98 Beginning or some Windows experience. |
Word
2000: Special Features
This 4-hour hands-on course
will teach participants how to use tables; use tabs to create columns or
special features such as a table of contents; insert images into text with
captions; mail merge for form letters and labels; borders and shading;
bulleted lists; replace and go to; more on headers and footers - inserting
footnotes, date and time; using templates.
Prerequisites: Word 2000: Basics or other word processing experience |
Excel 2000: Beginning
This is a 4-hour class which covers basic techniques for navigating Excel, manipulating rows and columns, creating and formatting a table, using merge and center, autofill, automatic series, and sorting. It will cover basic formulas such as sums, averages, and percents; and autocalculate. It will introduce the paste function for formulas; printing tips and using print preview to set margins, headers and footers. Creating reports with autoformat, charts and graphs.
Prerequisites: Experience with other office programs such as Word or Access.

Excel 2000: Intermediate
This is a 4-hour class which covers more techniques for manipulating worksheets, conditional formatting, hiding and re-displaying data, the IF() Function. It will also cover sorting, autofilter, and advanced filtering techniques; using data forms; creating a macro.
Prerequisites: A beginning Excel class or experience with the content covered in the Excel 2000: Beginning class.

Access 2000: Beginning
This is a 4-hour class that introduces database concepts and usage, design and table creation; techniques for navigating, designing and formatting tables; adding fields, field properties; selecting, deleting, and re-ordering records, fields, and columns in a table; sorting and filtering records, creating queries, creating and using forms.
Prerequisites: Windows and other office programs such as Word or Excel.

Microsoft Outlook 2000
This is a 4-hour class that teaches the skills for setting up and using the Outlook email program, the calendar, tasks folder, Outlook Today, journal and notes folder.
Prerequisites: Experience with Windows and an office program such as Word.

Publisher
2000: Desktop Publishing Tools & Wizards
This 4-hour, hands-on course
on desktop publishing will teach the participant how to use Publisher 2000
to create professional looking publications. It will cover how to use the
tools, wizards, design objects, and color schemes to create flyers, brochures,
business cards, and other publications. It will include using clip art,
and inserting images from scanned files.

Powerpoint
2000
In this 4 hour class, participants will learn to use this premier presentation software program which is included with Microsoft Office, and which enables users to create slideshows for computer monitors or overhead projectors. This hands-on class will teach participants how to use this program to assemble text, images, graphs and charts to create a representation of products, services or ideas for training or marketing.

Introduction
to the World Wide Web
Introduction to the World Wide Web
Participants will learn about: URL'S and websites; the Navigation toolbar; scroll bar, opening, navigating, and bookmarking websites; using search engines; audio and video on websites; and take a website tour. Searching the World Wide Web
This is a hands-on, two hour class for those who have been doing searches but wish to lean more advanced techniques for searching on the World Wide Web.

For those who know the basics of using Outlook Express, this 2 hour class will cover additional topics such as setting up filters and blocking email addresses, setting up separate identities; setting up a group mailing; setting up a new account; and virus protection.

WEBSITE DESIGN CLASSES
Easy
Web Page Design
This is a 4 hour course
designed for individuals interested in developing and publishing a Web
Site for their organization and business. Participants will learn how to
use an easy HTML Editor to develop simple yet eye catching web pages. Individuals
interested in developing a personal web site are invited to enroll as well.
Prerequisites: |
Good understanding of
computer operating system, i.e. Windows 95/98, Mac OS; experience using
word- processing applications; proficient at using a keyboard and mouse;
good understanding of the World Wide Web and e-mail, proficient with Web

Learning
HTML
This is a 4 hour course
designed to teach Internet users the basics of using the Hypertext Markup
Language (HTML) to create web pages, format documents and make them available
via the WWW. Participants will understand the HTML authoring language and
be able to develop web pages as well as maintain and update existing web
documents that have been authored with an HTML editor.

Promoting
Your Site on the WWW
This is a 2 hour course
designed for individuals, organizations and businesses on how to promote
their Web Site. Participants will learn about search engine listings, how
to make sure their site is listed on the different search engines, and
learn about Meta Tags. Participants will learn how to prepare and submit
their Web Site to various search engines and directories.

Know Basic HTML or how
to use WYSIWYG editor, Good understanding of Windows 95/98 or other OS
like Mac; experience using word- processing applications; proficient at
using a keyboard and mouse; understanding of the World Wide Web and e-mail,
