Getting started with your La Plaza Homepage

Your La Plaza account comes with 10MB of server space allotted for a homepage or any other files you would like to store in this space. Here's how to get started using it.

Create your page
Check out the resources on the right if you're not sure how to get started. La Plaza also offers classes in web development. Once everything looks good and is working on your computer, you're ready to upload the files to your La Plaza account.

FTP access
FTP access is enabled for your account. If you have problems please call 758-1836.

Transfer your files
Upload your files using an FTP application.
We like "FTP Explorer" for Windows or "Fetch" for the Mac, and both are available for download here.

Many HTML editors have a built in FTP component as well. Consult your software documentation for more on how to use these features.

You'll need to supply your FTP application with the following information:
Host or Server: laplaza.org
User ID: yourloginID
Password: yourpassword
Directory Path: public_html
or
/home/yourloginID/public_html

Accessing your site on the web
Once your page is uploaded to your account, it can be accessed using a web browser at "http://laplaza.org/~userID"

Don't forget the tilde (~) - it won't work without it.

Things to look out for
Avoid any spaces in filenames; and remember that once it's been uploaded to the Unix server that case matters - in other words, "filename.html" will be seen as a different file than "Filename.HTML".

These are the most common mistakes and easy to make since most desktop machines are case-insensitive and don't have a problem with spaces in filenames.

Hints
Name the first file you want seen "index.html" or "index.htm". This is the page that will be shown if someone requests "http://laplaza.org/~loginID".
This will also cause you to be listed in the La Plaza Users Homepages listing.

Keep your image file sizes as small as possible. Most people don't have the patience to wait for a 200k full-screen JPG file, no matter how cool it is.
