CHAMPIONS AGAIN!

The Taos Day School Eagles won their second consecutive Eight Northern Pueblos Elementary Basketball League Champioship on Saturday, March 23rd, by defeating the Santa Clara Braves 63-41 in the finals of the Eight Northern Torunament. Taos was led by Vernon, who had 31 points in the title game and was named to the All-Tournament team.

Having gone through the regular season with 12 wins and 0 losses, Taos was the number one seed and the favorite entering the Tournament, but things did not come easy for them in the Championship Game. At one point Santa Clara held a 20-15 lead, the first time Taos had trailed by more than two points all season. Taos managed to tie the game at 20 by halftime, and any hopes of a Santa Clara upset were quickly squashed by a 29-6 third quarter onslaught by Taos. Vernon had 13 points in the pivotal quarter and Peter added 10. Peter had 19 for the game, while Antonio contributed 7 and Cody 6.

In the semifinals the night before, Taos defeated host San Ildefonso by a score of 52-34. In that game Taos jumped out to an early 18-2 lead, and the closest San Ildefonso could come after that was nine points in the third quarter.

Also named to the All-Tournament team from Taos was Eliza, the only girl on the Eagles team. Other members of the basketball team include Eric, Jorden and Dylan.

Receiving special recognition from the League was the Eagles' Cheerleading and Drill Teams. Taos Day School is the only school in the Eight Northern League that has these support squads.

Taos had tremendous community support during the Tournament, as Taos' fans easily outnumbered those for the other schools. Taos gained other fans as well, as girls from the other teams repeatedly chanted Vernon's name.

Eagle players cut down the nets at the San Ildefonso gym, another memento to a year they can remember forever.

5th Grade Science Fair
by Tashina

On March 22 and 23 Sasha and Charisse went to Bismarck for the National Science Fair. When those two students went to Bismarck one of them came back a winner! That person was Sasha. Charisse wasn't mad when she came back, she was just excited that she got to go to the Nationals. I asked them what their experience was like in Bismarck and Charisse said it was different because she's never been so far. I asked them if it was hard getting judged and Sasha said no because she's used to it. Charisse said, "Kind of," because she's never made it to the nationals. What do they remember about the science fair in Bismarck? Sasha said having fun and seeing lots of things.
